Tennis Training Aids Tip: One Thought Can Change Your Game

If you are not satisfied with your tennis, have you tried these solutions:
  • tried to fix or change one of your strokes
  • engaged in practice with zillions of drills
  • played with better players to challenge you to higher levels of play
  • studied video analysis from top professionals
  • turned over half the internet for the ultimate solution for your problems
  • bought a new racquet to give you more control and power
If you've tried a lot of solutions from the list and you haven't advanced to your expected levels there may be something else holding you back – your MIND! Your mind can be your greatest enemy or your best ally – you just have to know how to direct it. If your mind is occupied with irrelevant thoughts about your goal (which in short term is hitting the ball in the desired target)
there is a big chance that you will miss the next shot.

But there is a very straight-forward and elegant solution to this problem – you need to have a winning thought in your mind and a backup answer.

1. Can I hit a good ball?
2. If the answer is no, then play a preventing shot.

What is a good ball? It depends on your level of play but there is always a good ball on all levels
  • with kids on mini court playing the soft balls
  • older kids who play only twice a week
  • competitive junior players
  • club level players
  • very good club level players
  • professionals
  • and all the levels in between...

Quick Start Tennis

tennis training aids
Quick Start Tennis is a graduated length system with two stages of play before progressing to a 72-foot full court. The first stage for beginning players is a 36-foot long court. If a tennis court is used, simply play the 36-foot length from doubles sideline to doubles sideline. The balls recommended for this 36-foot red stage court are the softball size red-colored "Quick Start 36 Foam" OR the red-colored "Quick Start 36" low-compression balls, which are 15% larger than regular tennis balls. These balls rebound slowly off the racquet and lower off the ground, allowing beginners and kids to swing freely while still controlling the balls. The second stage moves all beginning players to a 60-foot court. Use lines to "shorten" a regular tennis court by bringing in the baseline 9 feet on each side (or just setting up this length in a gymnasium). NOTE: Regular tennis balls bounce too quickly to play tennis on the slick floors of gymnasiums, but the slowest bouncing 36-foot stage balls are hardly affected and maintain their slow-bouncing characteristics. Target Systems

Learning and improving in tennis is like anything else in life. There’s an easy way and a hard way. The easy way is by using guidance systems, commonly known as tennis training aids and target systems. All tennis courts basically look alike. Colorful target systems increase focus and fun for all ages and abilities. Just as the stripes on a highway guide traffic to remain in a certain lane, creating visual guides for targets and movement can systematically guide random and inconsistent on-court habits into efficient and effective patterns.  “Primary targets” are typically air targets above the net and create boundaries in the air. These include Airzone and Target Trainers. “Secondary targets” or court targets define where a ball should land. The Ropezon, is still a classic and has been the most broadly used tennis target system in tennis history since its introduction by Joe Dinoffer in 1994. Training Tip for 2 Players: Attack and Neutralize Drill

Looking to improve your tennis game overall?  Two players can practice and play the “attack and neutralize” open situation drill.

Player A can start from a hand feed or by serving and his goal is to attack player B in any way.

Player B, on the other hand, doesn't look to attack—even if he has a chance—but he looks to neutralize player A by keeping the ball deep and away from his weapons, keep it very low or very high and so on.

Players can play five to 10 points and then switch roles. This game needs to played at least 10 minutes (up to 30) to have some effect—which means that the players actually start to learn and improve their shot selection and execution.

When you're involved in this type of tennis training, for the most part you can calmly analyze your tactics and see how well you played the last point—and see what needs to be improved in the next attempt.

This “attack and neutralize” drill also gets you to work on all types of shots—aggressive baseline shots, sitters, volleys, overheads, rally shots, defensive slice shots, passing shots and so on.

To improve, you'll need to work on types of play that maybe do not suit your current game style. If counter-punchers only counter-punch and aggressive baseliners only attack from the baseline, no improvement will result. Forcing yourself to play a certain type of play and stay disciplined through the point demonstrates taht there are other ways to win points, making you a more versatile player in the long term.

Tennis Training Aids Tip:
Successful tennis tactics when playing against left handers

When playing lefties, generally try to deprive them of angle on the forehand side. In other words when rallying, hit more shots down the middle of the court, this reduces their angle of return on what is presumably their stronger groundstroke. It also prevents you from being pulled out wide on your weaker backhand side. If you go wide it will generally (but not always be) to their backhand side, this can sometimes open up the court and allow you to hit your return to their (now open) forehand side. It is imperative that you keep your opponent guessing and not to be too predictable in your strategy. Likewise on the serve— do not give them too much angle when they are returning from the advantage side. Continued here on Tennis Training Aids Blog...
